नोबेल पुरस्कार की स्थापना स्वीडन के वैज्ञानिक अल्फ्रेड बर्नहार्ड नोबेल ने 1901 ईस्वी में की थी अलफ्रेड बर्नहार्ड नोबेल का जन्म 1833 ईस्वी में स्वीडन के शहर स्टॉकहोम में हुआ था 9 वर्ष की उम्र में वे अपने परिवार के साथ रूस चले गए अल्फ्रेड नोबेल एक अविवाहित स्वीडिश वैज्ञानिक और केमिकल इंजीनियर थे जिसने 1867 इसवी में डायनामाइट की खोज की स्वीडिश लोगों को 1896 ईस्वी में उनकी मृत्यु के बाद ही पुरस्कारों के बारे में पता चला जब उन्होंने उनकी वसीयत पढ़ी जिसमें उन्होंने अपने धन से मिलने वाली सारी वार्षिक आय पुरस्कारों की मदद करने में दान कर दी थी अपनी वसीयत में उन्होंने आदेश दिया था कि सबसे योग्य व्यक्ति चाहे वह इसकेडीनेवियन हो या ना हो पुरस्कार प्राप्त करेगा उनके द्वारा छोड़े गए धन पर मिलने वाला ब्याज उन व्यक्तियों के बीच वार्षिक रूप से बांटा जाएगा जिन्होंने विज्ञान साहित्य शांति और अर्थशास्त्र के क्षेत्र में उत्कृष्ट योगदान दिया है विश्व के 58960000 अमेरिकी डॉलर के सबसे अधिक गौरवशाली पुरस्कार को नोबेल फाउंडेशन द्वारा मदद प्रदान की जाती है

पहले नोबेल पुरस्कार पांच विषय में कार्य करने के लिए दिए जाते थे अर्थशास्त्र के लिए पुरस्कार स्वीडिश बैंक द्वारा अपने 300 वी वर्षगांठ के उपलक्ष्य में 1967 में आरंभ किया गया और इसे 1969 में पहली बार प्रदान किया गया इसे अर्थशास्त्र में नोबेल स्मृति पुरस्कार भी कहा जाता है।

पुरस्कार के लिए बनी समिति और चयनकर्ता प्रत्येक वर्ष अक्टूबर में नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेताओं की घोषणा करते हैं लेकिन पुरस्कारों का वितरण अल्फ्रेड नोबेल की पुण्य तिथि 10 दिसंबर को किया जाता है।

प्रत्येक पुरस्कार ने 1 वर्ष में अधिकतम 3 लोगों को पुरस्कार दिया जा सकता है इनमें से प्रत्येक विजेता को एक स्वर्ण पदक डिप्लोमा स्वीडिश नागरिकता में एक्सटेंशन और धन दिया जाता है।

अगर एक पुरस्कार में दो विजेता है तो धनराशि दोनों में समान रूप से बांट दी जाती है पुरस्कार प्राप्तकर्ता ओं की संख्या अगर तीन है तो चयन समिति के पास यह अधिकार होता है कि वह धनराशि को तीनों में बराबर बांट दें या 1 को आधा दे दे और बाकी दो को बचा धन बराबर बांट दें।

अब तक केवल दो बार मृत व्यक्तियों को यह पुरस्कार दिया गया है पहली बार एल इ एक्स एल कार्ड फील्ड अट को 1931 ईस्वी में और दूसरी बार संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के महासचिव टैग हैमर सोल्ड को 1961 ईस्वी में

1974 ईस्वी में नियम बना दिया कि मरणोपरांत किसी को नोबेल पुरस्कार नहीं दिया जाएगा।

इंटरनेशनल कमिटी आफ रेड क्रॉस को शांति का नोबेल पुरस्कार तीन बार दिया गया है 1917 1944 एवं 1963 में।

सर विलियम हेनरी बैग ने अपने बेटे विलियम एलब्राइट के साथ भौतिकी का नोबेल पुरस्कार 1980 में प्राप्त किया।

सबसे कम उम्र में नोबेल पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाले व्यक्ति लॉरेंस ब्रैग थे।

सबसे अधिक उम्र में लियोनिड हर क्विज ने नोबेल पुरस्कार जीता है उन्हें वर्ष 2007 का अर्थशास्त्र का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया है उनकी उम्र उस समय 90 वर्ष थी।

द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध के समय 1940 से 1942 तक नोबेल पुरस्कार नहीं दिया गया।

नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता भारतीय/भारतीय मूल के व्यक्ति

रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर:-1910 में एक अंग्रेज कवि w.b years ने टैगोर की काव्य संग्रह गीतांजलि का अंग्रेजी अनुवाद किया एवं प्रस्तावना लिखी जिस पर 1913 में टैगोर को नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।

सीवी रमन:-इनकी खोज रमन प्रभाव के लिए इन्हें 1930 में भौतिक का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया।

हरगोविंद खुराना:-इन्हें 1968 में कृत्रिम जिनके संश्लेषण के लिए चिकित्सा का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया।

मदर टेरेसा:-इन्हें 1979 में इनके समाज सेवा संबंधी कार्यों के लिए शांति का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।

सुब्रमण्यम चंद्रशेखर:-इन्हें 1983 में इनकी खोज चंद्रशेखर सीमा के लिए भौतिकी का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।

अमरत्य सेन:-इन्हें 1998 में कल्याणकारी अर्थशास्त्र के लिए अर्थशास्त्र का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।

वीएस नायपॉल:-इन्हें 2001 में साहित्य का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया है।

वेंकटरमन रामकृष्ण:-भारतीय-अमेरिकी रामकृष्ण को अमेरिका के थामस की स्टेट्स और इजराइल की अदा ई योनथ के साथ प्रोटीन का निर्माण करने वाले राइबोसोम की संरचना और कार्यप्रणाली की खोज के लिए संयुक्त रूप से 2009 में रसायन विज्ञान का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।

1937,1938,1939,1947 एवं 1948 में एवं 1948 में गांधी जी को 5 बार शांति पुरस्कारों के लिए नामित किया गया पर एक बार भी उन्हें इस पुरस्कार के लिए नहीं चुना गया।
